DS: Dragon Quest IX
Presentation: Square Enix really took there time to carefully craft this DS title!!! Presentation wise the game is one of the prettier cell-shaded games on the DS. Conserving the iconic Anime style found in previous titles the game holds on it’s own and bring with it a charming art direction for all ages. Towns, dungeons, forests, all look great and varied with different art styles and color palettes. The animations are top notch and are well executed… especially during the several enemy encounters you’ll face.
Controls: What can be said about controls on a turned-based RPG?!!! DragonQuest IX offers 2 control schemes during battle similar to what one can expect from a Pokemon game. The player can use the touch screen to place commands or simply use the directional pad to execute your attacks. Simple but effective controls!!!
Lasting Appeal: Easily one of the beefier titles out there!!!! The game comes packed with side-missions that should keep anybody busy for months to come. If that wasn’t enough players can download additional missions off the Dragon Quest servers!!!
Sound: The games music is well done even if there re-used tunes from past titles in the franchise!!! For a DS game the orchestral music really sounds good with your headphones plugged-in!!! The simple and iconic sound effects give an old-school feel when games where meant to be fun!!! Overall great stuff for a DS game!!!
Originality: Dragon Quest IX is the least original title this year. And it’s by default the game keeps it’s old school roots and charm to it’s 9th entry. Dragon Quest is one of the top selling games in Japan for keeping that solid hardcore RPG feel. Yet there are a few new additions in this game, for example multiplayer and the addition to create your own characters. Also the ability to download additional missions and items!!!
Overall: This game is a solid game!!! An easily a game for the Hardcore crowd!!! EPIC win for DS owners!!!
