PGM’s 2010 Thee Best Portable Games!!! Best PSP Game!!!

> Welcome to PGM’s first Thee Best Portable Games Awards!!! Our crew will name out the best game for each portable system. The games we’re graded on 5 areas: PRESENTATION, CONTROLS, LASTING APPEAL, SOUND, ORIGINALITY

PSP: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Presentation: This is a AAA game and it shows!!! Hideo Kojima ready took this title seriously as everything in the game is carefully done to a perfect shine very few games can accomplish on the PSP. The menus are slick and easy to navigate, which means a lot since this game is filled with information and hidden gems to discover. The level designs are amazing and varied (from jungle terrains to broken down industrial warehouses). Making one appreciate the little details found in the games environments as players carefully view there surroundings and study enemy behaviors. Snake’s signature moves are all intact and fluid, leaning on the walls, sneaking behind enemies, choke holds, somersaults, reloads… the animations here are top notch!!! The giant Metal Gears steal the show as they fill the entire screen as they violently try to eliminate you!!!

Controls: The controls are solid and responsive. Few would argue the games control layouts are somewhat complex but Konami made sure the player can custom there layout to whatever fits there needs. Yet I will agree there we’re a few moments where I needed to wrap my fingers around the PSP in order to accomplish a mission. Which reminds me, there’s a cutscene in the game that needs the player to rapidly press the triangle button 100 times in 2 minutes… WHAT A PAIN… Not cool Hideo Kojima you almost broke my thumb!!! But overall the controls are solid and responsive!!!

Lasting Appeal: Hands down Peace Walker will keep you busy for months. The main story is around forty 15-20 minute long missions. There’s 121 Extra-ops missions that puts the player in diverse situation (like the Monster Hunter missions!!!). Mother Base is another cool feature in the game that deserves it’s own article to explain it completely. And there’s Co-op… Easily the most enjoyable aspect of the game is teaming up with a couple of  friends as you team up against a giant Metal Gear!!!!

Sound: One of the strongest aspects of the game has to be the sound. The voice work is top-notch as one should expect from a Metal Gear game. There’s an impressive amount of voiced dialog in the game and for the most part it’s really well executed. By default the game doesn’t encourage background music as players will need to focus on the sound of footsteps and enemy chatter. Yet mid way through the game you’ll find an old Sony Walkman which allows you to play some of the series most memorable tunes!!! Heaven Divide is one great track to listen!!!

Originality: The addition of Co-op missions is one of the newer aspects of the game. I can’t stress this enough but the Co-op is really fun and a blast. You’ll even be able to unlock special weapons that could only be used in multiplayer. Another aspect I really enjoyed was the mother base feature allowing you to recruit personnel to develop new weapons or provide intel support.

Overall: This game is a blast and should be on anybody’s PSP library!!!! This is portable gaming at it’s best!!!
